What is it?

Meet Galumph

Galumph the Seal is a high-speed 3D action platformer in the tradition of Sonic Adventure. Its hero is Galumph: grey, spotted, big-eyed and very round, who has just escaped a life of nightly circus tricks.

On land he waddles. At speed he is a homing missile. Roll into a ball and chain homing attacks from enemy to enemy, blast through loops, grind rails across the sky, bounce off springs and belly-slide down icy slopes, scooping up every fish in sight. Fish are your health: get hit and they scatter.

Each world mixes classic speed-platforming acts with surprising twists (karts, sleds, gliders, swimming, jetpacks, pinball, tiny planets...) and ends in a special act that becomes a different game altogether.

  • Momentum you can feel. Homing attacks, loops, rails, slopes and boost pads, tuned for keyboard, controller and touch.
  • A surprise in every world. Eleven special acts, eleven mini-genres.
  • Charm first. A cuddly hero, Animalese-style voices, slapstick writing and a story about leaving a cage behind.

Planned for the future

Build your own

Galumph's acts are built in its own level editor. The plan is to open that editor up to everyone, with a community hub where players share the levels they make.

The level editor with Palm Bluffs from Sunny Shoals open: grassy cliffs, palms and a boardwalk over the sea, with the object list and inspector beside it.
The level editor, building Palm Bluffs in Sunny Shoals
  1. Make

Draw roads and rails, sculpt hills, drop in loops, springs, enemies, switches and doors, then press Play to try it instantly.

  2. Share

Upload your levels to a community server for anyone to play.

  3. Play and rate

Download other players' levels, rate your favourites and see what's popular right now.

A plan for later on, not a promise: there are no dates for it yet.

Behind the scenes

How it's made

Galumph runs on its own engine, built on three.js, made for phones first and scaling all the way up to a gaming PC.

Sunstone Ruins: carved masonry, water and sky.

Art, stored as code

Galumph's characters, props and textures are designed like any game art, then built and stored as compact code instead of bulky model and image files. That keeps the download small and loading quick on a phone, and lets every outfit fit the seal perfectly.

Sounds from scratch

All 193 sound effects come out of the game's own synthesizer, and every character chatters in an Animalese-style voice of their own.

Smooth everywhere

The same game runs in a browser, on Android and on PC, and plays the same at 30, 60, 120 or 165 frames a second.

Its own tools

A level editor, plus editors for cutscenes, characters, animations and world maps, all testing in the real game at the press of a button.

The road ahead

What's next

Where Galumph is heading, in no particular order. A wish list, not a schedule: no dates and no promises.

  • Even more to find

Enhancing the acts with even more interesting gameplay, more secrets and more routes to discover.

  • A deeper story

A fuller script with a recurring cast of friends, more context for the journey and more heart, keeping the slapstick and the seal puns.

  • Original music

A soundtrack will be composed for the game, for every world, special act and boss.

  • Art upgrades

Refined characters, key art, and environment passes on each world's landmarks.

  • Community levels

The level editor open to everyone, with a community server to share, download and rate levels. More above.

  • PC and Steam

The desktop build already runs, with keyboard, mouse and controllers. A Steam page is the next step we'd like to take.

  • Consoles

Consoles are the long-term plan. The game is built to be portable from the ground up, so Galumph can waddle onto more screens.

Devlog

From prototype to today

Every milestone gets a new version of the game's design document. Here is what changed at each one, what was planned next, and the seal, the worlds and the cast, then and now.

  1. The first Galumph, a blocky grey seal, running down a three-lane ice track toward the camera, with a penguin in the next lane.

    Milestone 1Design doc v0.1Done

    The runner prototype

Galumph started life as a three-lane endless runner: a round seal, a snowy track and a lot of fish. The very first design document was written to track what was built, what was wanted and what was still just an idea.

    • A seal built from simple shapes, switching lanes, jumping and sliding
    • Health and stamina, with a ground pound to cancel a jump
    • Equipment pickups, enemies, obstacles and a fuel-powered boost
What the design doc planned next
    • Four shields with their own powers: a magnet with a double jump, forward flight and an ever-higher bounce
    • Fish currencies and a shop
    • Hats, coats, backpacks and faces, some with small abilities
    • More animal enemies, and boss fights "eventually"
  2. The smoother, big-eyed seal running in a bubble shield along the curving runner track, with ice floes on the sea and a fish ahead.

    Milestone 2Design doc v0.2Done

    The runner grows up

The prototype gained the ideas that would carry into everything after it, from rails and the homing attack to the wardrobe and Blue Spheres.

    • Shields, rail grinding, near misses and forks in the track
    • Jungle and desert biomes, flying enemies and the first homing attack
    • A shop, three kinds of seal, 50 faces and over a hundred camo patterns
    • Blue Spheres, the first classic special stage

    • Blue Spheres rebuilt, plus the Half-Pipe and a dungeon crawler
    • A detailed new seal, new enemy and fish models, animated water and weather
